Lakeside Cabin Series
A new design series from the limestone cliffs and smooth pebble shores of Wisconsin's Door County.
We have ventured into vintage and mid-century cabins and cottages that dot the landscape on this narrow peninsula that thumbs it’s way north into the middle of Lake Michigan - a landscape of cedars, shorelines and shining white birch trees. A place that still evokes lore of maritime shipwrecks at Death’s Door, where early settlers survived on fishing and farming for sustenance, and where villagers provided a safe harbor for fur traders hungry and in need of cordwood - an early local industry - to fuel their ships. Later, lush Door County and its charming villages became a place where passenger steamers and tourists passed through for fish boils and cherry pie, until finally becoming humble vacation retreats for 20th century families looking for reprieve from hot summers in Chicago or Milwaukee. Heavily influenced by Scandinavian, Norwegian and German settlers to the area, Door County’s architecture features red barns, cozy shiplapped “hygge” cabins, Norwegian stave churches, and Moravian steeples, where in Ephraim - a village of 300 year-round residents - the annual Fyr Bal scares winter away with a huge bonfire, dance and song.
A charming shiplap cottage dates back to 1900. Stone, shiplap and log cabins are still prevalent in Door County.
